Welcome to Kwon's group!

The Augmented Materials Design Laboratory develops advanced materials for sustainable energy and environmental technologies by leveraging atomistic simulations to uncover fundamental mechanisms and transform them into experimentally viable design strategies. We employ density functional theory (DFT), molecular dynamics (MD), and multiscale simulation approaches to rigorously elucidate reaction mechanisms and the origins of material properties at the atomic level. Based on these insights, our research focuses on the design of high-performance electrochemical catalyst materials for energy and environmental applications, including green hydrogen production, hydrogen storage, carbon dioxide reduction, and wastewater treatment. By bridging multiple spatial and temporal scales, we seek to achieve a deep understanding of atomic and molecular interactions under realistic reaction environments and to establish practical, reality-oriented materials design strategies that can be directly implemented in experiments. Such computation-driven design serves as a key tool for reducing trial-and-error processes and significantly accelerating the discovery and optimization of novel materials.
